My area of specialization is contemporary art. My dissertation entitled,\u00a0The Art of Leon Golub (1946-1978),\u00a0was a chronologically structured account of the development of a\u00a0Chicago born, New York based contemporary figurative artist. I teach a wide range of undergraduate courses including introductory surveys of Western Art and upper level courses on 19th and 20th century art, modern architecture, contemporary art and architecture, art history methods \u00a0and the neuroscience of art<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">For the last ten years, I have \u00a0been involved in introducing students and the scholarly community to \u00a0a \u00a0contemplative approach to art. \u00a0I have presented numerous papers on this topic \u00a0and also introduced meditative practices involving art in my upper level art history classes. \u00a0The promotion of a contemplative approach also dovetails with my interest in the neuroscience of art \u00a0which is important for explaining the aesthetic experience in scientific terms as well as potentially demonstrating the power of the art experience to transform brain function.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Contact:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">(540) 654.1938<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"mailto:jdreiss@umw.edu?subject=Inquiry%20From%20Department%20Website\">jdreiss@umw.edu<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a Professor of Art History at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
